Turnbull’s very own Mark Turnbull has just returned from a trans-atlantic journey in search of retail success. The Alnwick butcher was the only U.K. representative at the 2019 Retail Success Summit held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, along with over 500 of North Americas finest independent retailers.
The retail success summit is the largest learning conference for independent retailers anywhere in the world and is a two day conference that includes a combination of high-level strategic thinking as well as in-depth explorations of winning tactics.
This years conference, hosted by two of the worlds most successful retail coaches, Bob and Susan Negan also featured headline speaker Ari Weinzweig of Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Ari started Zingerman’s Delicatessen back in 1982 with a 20,000 bank loan and a staff of two. Today Zingerman’s is an Ann Arbor institution – a community of ten unique businesses with a staff of over 500 and annual sales approaching 40 million dollars a year.
Following his attendance to the conference Mark said ‘I’ve always believed that to be successful in business it’s vital to educate yourself – retail is a challenging environment especially for small independent businesses, you need to stay ahead. The retail success summit is the biggest in the world, so I figured that was where Turnbull’s needed to be!’
Bob’s rallying call at the end of the conference was ‘Education without action is merely entertainment’ and Mark is now looking forward to taking action within the Alnwick based business.
Fifth generation butcher Mark added ‘I’ve brought back loads of ideas and can’t wait to implement them into our business. These are exciting times as we look forward to the opening of our new Northumberland Food Hall in October and the inspiration and education gained from the summit has put us in good stead for the future. We’re all excited at Turnbull’s’.
