The team at Turnbull’s take great pride in the products they produce and love to use local ingredients wherever possible, so you can imagine their delight when the Northumberland Sausage they had crafted scooped a Gold Award in this year’s Smithfield Awards in London.
Turnbull’s Northumberland Sausage is made using Northumbrian Pork flavoured with Lindisfarne Mead, Chainbridge Honey and Herbs. The sausage was initially created back in the nineties for a competition to create a sausage to represent Northumberland – similar to Cumberland and Lincolnshire.
The sausage has gone on to be Turnbull’s best-selling speciality sausage and is served on the menus of many hotels, restaurants and bed and breakfast establishments throughout the Alnwick area. The sausage making at Turnbull’s is managed by Dan Turnbull and it was Dan who crafted the Northumberland sausage for this year’s Smithfield awards.
With five years’ experience under his belt Dan has honed his sausage making skills and the success of his sausage is down to texture and taste. The judges’ comments for our entry were that our Northumberland sausage ‘offered a great balance of meat and seasoning with a subtle flavour’.
We’re going to celebrate this award over the next few weeks and look out in the shop for dishes based around our Northumberland sausage including Northumberland sausage rolls and chicken breasts filled with Northumberland sausage meat!
